Click here to start a blog on WordPress, then use the tutorial below for the easy step by step directions.
So, let's jump right into it, guys, and let's start dominating WordPress. The first step is getting your domain and hosting set up. This is a very simple concept. Your domain is simply your www.yourbusiness.com. And hosting is what allows you to build your website on top of that name. So essentially, your domain name is buying a plot of land, and then your hosting is the ability to actually build on top of that. There are a lot of different hosts to choose from, a lot of different hosting companies. But the truth is that a lot of these sellers are actually really bad re-sellers. As you can see, HostGator is a phenomenal, big five host, but they sell re-seller hosting. So, maybe 20, 30% of the hosting companies out there that you have encountered up to this point, are just re-sellers who are charging more for the exact same service of HostGator. And HostGator is a phenomenal resource because it's extremely affordable and they're extremely reliable. You got 24/7 phone support, you got 24/7 tech support and they just have all the features that you might need. So, I highly recommend HostGator for your hosting. And I'm gonna sign up with them right now in this video and I hope you'll do the same.
So, we're gonna view our web hosting plans. And truthfully, you only need the Hatchling Plan, guys. You can take a look at the Baby Plan, take a look at the Business Plan, see if those are right for you. But I recommend that you do that just in case you are an outlier, but for most sites, the Hatchling Plan is gonna be a great place to start.
So, hit “order now“. And so, this is where you're gonna type in your domain name. Like I said, this is your www.yourbusiness.com, what do you want people to type in to access your site. Let me type in mine. So, I typed in diygodstest.com for my domain name and it's great, because it says “Added – Primary, it's available.” Remember, only one person can own a domain name at any time, that's why if you type in Google.com, it always goes to Google, because Google owns Google.com. So, what happens if I type in Google.com? It's gonna say, sorry, you know, it's not available, try something else. It might even give you some suggestions down here. So, keep trying until you find a domain name that both you like and is available. For me, I'm gonna do diygodstest.com and we'll see it says great again, and we can scroll down here.
Now, domain privacy is something that you actually might want to think about getting. I personally am gonna get it with my order. Basically what it is, is that there's something called WHOIS. And if you type into Google WHOIS and you put in a URL of a website, that it can show who owns that website. Now, if they don't have domain privacy on it, you're gonna see people's personal information. And obviously that's something that's, you know, a huge privacy issue. So, if you get domain privacy, instead of showing your personal information, it's HostGator saying, “Tell you what, instead of putting your personal information there, we'll take that hit and we'll put all of HostGator's information there instead.” So, that's great, so that if anybody's looking up your website, and is trying to find who owns it, you know, that it's not gonna show your address, but rather it's gonna show HostGator's information. And for a measly 12.95 a year for that privacy, in my personal opinion, I definitely think it's worth it. Now, for these other two Site Lock and Site Backup. I'm going to choose toughs two also. Take a look and see if it's right for you. I'm a big fan of having my website protected from hackers and also being able to have it restored simply with 1-Click Restore. It's up to you and most most people pick these two options.
So, I just teased you guys about this and it's the 25% off discount. I'm gonna show you how to do that right now. At the very bottom of the order page is a section where you can enter a coupon code. If you want to save 25% on your right now just enter DIYGDS25 in the Coupon Code area and click the Validate button and that's it. You now are going to save 25% off on your new domain and hosting. Gratz!
Domain Privacy is optional, like I said, but I do recommend it. The privacy, so that your information doesn't show up to the whole world, and then your domain registration.
So, it cost me $12.95 to register diygodstest.com and I have that for an entire year. So, this is an entire like all-inclusive package. It gets you your domain for an entire year, your hosting for an entire year. So, basically it just sets your website up on the Internet for an entire year for $106 dollars, guys. If you can't justify in your head spending only $106 bucks to get your entire website up on the Internet for an entire year – you're nuts! That's insanely cheap. Imagine the possibilities of what you can do with that. Imagine the revenue that you can generate, the popularity that you can generate, the fact that you can just… the image that it gives you; anything for only $106. You probably spend more than that on a night out for dinner.
So, that's it for how to easily get your website hosting started with HostGator. Now lets move onto the next step, and I hope you can do that with me.
Alright, so I just filled out all my information, so I'm just gonna hit “I've read the terms and conditions” and agree, and hit continue. Alright, so I set up to be paying with PayPal. If you set up for a credit card, you might be seeing something a little bit different. But I'm just gonna go up here and hit “Pay now with PayPal” and it's gonna take me to PayPal. Obviously I just don't want you guys seeing my PayPal information. So, I'm gonna fill this out here, and just hit “Pay now”.
And so, what's gonna happen now is that we're just gonna hit “Return to HostGator”. And HostGator's gonna send us an email within like moments of us setting this up here and making our payment for our hosting. And it's gonna give us all of our information to log into our account, so “Thank you for enrolling, your card has been billed in your local currency.” Stupid way to say it, but let's go check our email now and get into our account.
Alright, so there's a lot of stuff in here too, just personal information, login information, you know the drill. And so, basically what we're gonna do now is go ahead and open up our control panel. And I'm actually gonna had back over to my email and just grab my username and password. And we can log in.
Alright, guys. So now, this is where the content of the video gets really, really juicy because what we're going to be doing is actually setting up our WordPress site. So, let's go ahead and do that. So, we're gonna scroll on down until we find something that is called Software/Services and click on “QuickInstall” and it looks like a little stopwatch with a little arrow around it.
Next after clicking on QuickInstall this is gonna allow us to do is actually install WordPress, so under Blog Software we have WordPress here. We can click on that, hit “continue” and this is where you just fill out your WordPress login information, so admin emails, basically where they're going to send updates, if you have comments and stuff, and just like if you need to reset your password, so I'm gonna put that in here. Blog title, obvious. Admin user, what you're gonna login with, first name and last name. Simple as that. Then you just hit “install now”.
So, we have diygodstest.com right up here, as our selected domain, obviously it's the only one on this HostGator account. So now, in just a matter of seconds, it's gonna install WordPress for us; a process that normally takes a really long time and a lot of technical knowledge to do, it just did automatically and it's gonna give us our logging information right to right down. And so, what we can do is it says you can access your site now by going here.
So, I'll click on that. And what might happen is a page like this, and I'm glad that this happened. When you first set up your site, it can sometimes take a little while for the domain to actually propagate to the HostGator servers, so you have one of two options, if this is the case. The first option is that you can just wait a couple hours and it will just automatically propagate within the next few hours, and then you can start working on your site. Or the second option is you can actually contact HostGator support and say, “Hey, can you guys speed up the domain propagation, you know, I wanted to be working on my site right now.” And usually they can do it very, very quickly. So, that's one of two options.
Alright, the site is now up and running. If we open this up, we can take a look. And what you're gonna get right off the bat is just their very basic, standard WordPress theme, but we're gonna be customizing this in this part of the article. But, what we're gonna do first, before we get to that, is I'm gonna copy this password here and our username is diygodsadmin. I'm gonna go into the admin area of WordPress. Now, this is something that you're gonna want to bookmark; it's just your domain name.com/WP–admin. And this is where you're gonna log in to edit your WordPress website.
So, diygodsadmin and my password, and I'll hit login. So, the great thing about WordPress is, no matter where you are, no matter what computer you're on, you don't need any special software; all you have to do is log into this, you know, your domain/WP–admin and you can be adding post to your site, adding pages, adding images, adding videos, monitoring comments, you can be changing the theme, you can be adding more plug-ins – any computer in the world with Internet connection. That's how cool WordPress is. No software required.
Alright so, what we're gonna do first is just go ahead to appearance here and we're gonna take a look at themes. And so, you're gonna see basically what we just saw, and that is our current activated WordPress theme, very standard. And the one down here is just very standard as well. What we want to do is click on “install themes” here, and what you can do is you can search by certain parameters. If you know something very specific that you want your site to look like, including colors, including you know, do you want a sidebar, do you not want a sidebar, special features, all of that junk. You can do a custom search here. Or, what I like to do, is take a look at the featured templates and you can check out all of these templates. And as far as I'm concerned, all of these are free. So, you can just take a look at these, you know, see which one might suit your fancy, and if none of them suit your fancy, do some searches and you'll find a whole bunch more free themes.
But what I'm gonna do for this tutorial is actually… Hmm, which one do we wanna do? I'll go with the generic one. And so, what's gonna happen is that it's gonna unpack it and you can just hit “activate” right here. And let's check right back at diygodstest.com now, instead of looking like this, when I hit the refresh button. We have our new layout activated, but guys, this is just the start of the process. What you can do now is go back into your WP–admin, your admin panel and you can click and setup many other customization options to get the look and feel you want. This is how easy it is to edit your WordPress theme.
So, what I'm gonna recommend is two things. The first thing is just before you do anything else, just putz around with it for a little while and start to learn how it works a little bit. And then the second thing I'm gonna recommend is to take a look at some tutorials that are gonna show you how to actually, you know, do special stuff within WordPress. So, if you want to learn more about WordPress, go check out many of the WordPress tutorials over on YouTube, it's totally free. With YouTube videos you can learn how to use WordPress and get a little bit more comfortable with it.
So, I hope you guys found this article helpful. It was a blast to make it for you and I can't wait to see some of the WordPress sites that you guys make, so send them to me, if you've found this tutorial helpful. And I hope you have an absolutely fantastic rest of your day.
